Up Up and Away!

The dream of flying without wings is closer to reality than ever before. Check out these fantastic ways in which human beings can fall through the air, glide through the sky and even feel completely weightless.

Skydiving

Do you fancy throwing yourself out of a plane at 13,000 feet? Well why not try a terrifying skydive and get your adrenalin really pumping? Stand on the edge of a plane before tumbling through the sky and experience what it is like to freefall before safely releasing your parachute. There is simply no way of describing the true excitement you will feel as you see the world below you with nothing under your feet. Be as free as a bird and enjoy a truly life-changing adventure.

Indoor Skydiving

Incredibly, you can now go skydiving without even getting into a plane. Head to an entertainment centre like Xscape in Milton Keynes and you can actually enjoy the feeling of skydiving inside a specially-designed wind tunnel powerful enough to test the aerodynamics of a Formula 1 racing car. A specially-trained instructor will help you get into a neutral flying position before teaching you all the basic moves – does it get any cooler than that?

Para-Gliding

If you are brave enough, try your hand at paragliding and experience the thrill of a free-flying glider aircraft. Although there is no engine insight, a paraglider can stay in the air for more than two hours and can cover many hundreds of kilometres. What better way to see the world like never before and get a totally different perspective of life. Discover things you would have never noticed before while suspended in a harness and let the fabric wing get caught in the breeze.

Zero Gravity

Believe it or not you can now actually experience zero gravity without heading into space. The Zero Gravity Corporation actually introduced commercial Zero G flights so that people had a sense of what it would be like to work as an astronaut. Costing around £1,800 for a 3-hour flight, this incredible weightless experience is a much cheaper way of achieving this bizarre sensation than rocketing to the moon.

Air Rollercoaster

Feel the exhilaration of being weightless onboard Air, one of Alton Towers' most unique and terrifying rollercoasters. Defy gravity and face your fears by twisting, turning and looping through the air narrowly missing footpaths, trees and rocks. Tilted forward so you are facing the ground, this ride is certainly not for the light-hearted but is fantastic for anyone who wants to feel like they are flying.

Wing Walking

Consider yourself an adrenalin junky? Well why not have a go at wingwalking? This extreme sport involves strapping yourself to the top of a plane and holding on tight as you soar around 500ft into the air and face breathtaking speeds of up to 120mph. A wonderful way to see things like never before, this is definitely an experience you won’t forget – if you are brave enough to try it.

So there you have it, a selection of ways in which flying is virtually a reality.

The World As We Know It

Every time a country's boundary changes or it changes it's name, it renders all current atlases out of date. Now with the use of the internet, it is all too easy to change; but printed copies are not so easy. Here are some of the changes that our world maps have seen over the past 100 years.

This map shows the world as it was in 1922. In this year alone there were 3 changes including the creation of the Union of Soviet Social Republics followed by 2 changes in 1923 and one in 1925 being the change of Norway's capital city's name from Kristiania to Oslo. In 1927, Australia moved it's capital from Melbourne to Canberra then in 1929 the Vatican City declared independence from Italy. A particularly poignant one considering more recent events is that in October 1932, Iraq became independent from the United Kingdom.

After incorporating the changes from previous maps, this 1935 map lasted a year before any changes were made. However in 1937 Japan invades China and with the Munich Agreement in 1938, this transferred the Sudatenland from Czechoslovakia to Germany and part of Slovakia to Hungary. In 1939 after the outbreak of World War II, Poland was partitioned between Germany and the Soviet Union. In 1940, Germany annexed Alsace-Lorraine but in 1944, France regained it back and following the end of World War II, Poland declared its independence.

During 1958, there were massive changes in the middle east with Syria and Egypt forming the United Arab Republic then joining North Yemen to form the United Arab States. The following year, Alaska and Hawaii became the 49th and 50th states of the United States of America respectively. During the 1960's, 21 countries gained independence from the United Kingdom including Cyprus in 1960, Singapore in 1963 and Barbados in 1966.

During 1967, Israel occupied the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Sinai Peninsula and Golan Heights after winning the six days war. This was followed in 1971 with the formation of the United Arab Emirates UAE) and the independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan.

During the early 1970's, many countries gained independence including Cape Verde from Portugal, Papa New Guinea from Australia and Saint Lucia from the United Kingdom. Following the Vietnam War, 1975 saw North and South Korea reunited and in 1982, Queen Elizabeth signed her authorisation for Canada to be completely independent from the UK with a new constitution.

1991 saw Kuwait liberated from Iraq the day before the end of the Gulf War and major changes came in the east with the dissolution of the USSR and places such as Latvia, Ukraine, Moldova and Azerbyjian become countries in their own right. This was followed in 1993 with the dissolution of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

In 1995, India changed the name of Bombay to Mumbai and on 1st July 1997, Hong Kong was transferred from the United Kingdom to the Peoples Republic of China. New Year's Eve 1999 saw the Panama Canal Zone transferred from the United States to Panama. A new millennium brought three new states in India and the State of Bahrain became the Kingdom of Bahrain. Following the invasion of Afghanistan, The Islamic State of Afghanistan became the Traditional Islamic State of Afghanistan.

Since 2005, there have been few countries changing hands but rather name changes and states merging. 2006 saw Serbia and Montenegro become two separate states, in 2008 Ha Tay Province and Hanoi merged in Vietnam, 2009 required arbitration between Slovenia and Croatia regarding a border dispute that resulted in Slovenia lifting the veto of Croatia to enter the EU. July 2011 saw the latest change when The Republic of South Sudan declared independence from the Republic of Sudan that can be seen on the latest world map.

Travel with Less Expenses

Traveling seems to be the most enjoyable thing to do in the world. Getting away from home and discovering new places is a great experience. As most people say, traveling is a perfect way to relieve stress and get away from the usual activities of life. It enables the person to see the world in greater perspective and appreciate life to the fullest.

A lot of people perceive traveling as a big expense to make. True to say, traveling requires plane tickets, hotels, transportation and food. All these things should be considered beforehand in order to have a smooth sailing trip. With different travel agencies that exist these days, people can travel across the globe without the worry of the tickets, food and many more. Many agencies are offering package deals so it will guide every traveler of the possible expenses of the entire trip. This is such a great way to enjoy traveling without spending too much.

For people who are traveling on their own or those who opt not to go with travel agencies, they can still enjoy a less expensive travel. All they need to do is to book for earlier flights. Cheap plane tickets can be obtained as many airlines are offering big discounts on special holidays. When the plane tickets are purchased, save money for the trip. Set aside some good amount every week or every month and deposit it in a savings account. Plan ahead and estimate the possible expenses for the trip. These expenses will usually include hotel, insurance, food and transportation. Make sure to prepare extra money for unexpected expenses along the way. Bring the necessary items that are needed everyday like toothbrush, toothpaste and other sorts of toiletries. Do not forget to bring crackers or candies in cases when food seems to be expensive.

When arriving at the place of destination, always be wise in spending money. Stick to what is planned and budgeted. Minimize shopping or purchasing items that can be found in your place and always keep track on the expenses. Whether a credit card or cash is used, it is important to evaluate the expenses and never overspend every day. Stay outside the city and eat at cheap restaurants with excellent delicacies. Venture out the best and the cheapest destination of the place. Make friends with other people and do not afraid to mingle with them. They might treat you for food or drinks. Have fun but never forget to spend within the means.

Traveling is definitely fun and exciting but set aside a budget when going home. Ask for cheap taxis or buses in going to the airport. Some airport terminals require the traveler to pay certain fees and taxes so prepare something for it. Usually, food and other items sold at the airport are expensive so never forget to bring snacks and drinks if allowed. Be ahead of time in the airport in order not to miss the flight and start saving again for the next planned trip.

Teen Travel Safety Tips

For teens, traveling after high schools an excellent way to experience the real world before making important decisions about college. Some will choose volunteer travel, while others may choose special student travel programs that can look good on a college application. Stepping out into the world carries some risks, so be sure to follow these teen travel safety tips.

Always Carry a Cell Phone
Carrying a cell phone in case of an emergency is always a good idea. This is particularly important if a teen and his/her friends will be traveling in a backwoods area for hiking or camping. If someone is injured or otherwise incapacitated, one of the others can call for help. Cell phones, though they are often overused in today’s world, can be lifesavers in certain situations.

Avoid Harmful Substances
If the teenagers are students who are headed to the clubs to have fun with friends, they should avoid alcohol and drugs. Taking in these substances can make people unaware of their physical surroundings. It may also cause them to become uninhibited with their behavior. Dimly lit alleys in strange towns and cities should be avoided. Likewise, getting behind the wheel of a car or truck while under the influence is unacceptable, and can only lead to harm.

Pack Wisely
For teens leaving the country and going overseas on a school trip, all aspects of their travel arrangements should be made well ahead of time. This will usually involve securing a passport, building up a decent bank account, and triple checking that all essentials have been neatly packed in a durable suitcase. Adhering to a strict travel itinerary and calling home to touch base with parents is important. Both mom and dad will want to know that everything is going ok.If they can help it, they should avoid taking personal mementos or other objects that carry significant value, especially if they are items that are sentimental and close to the heart. For example, wearing a loved one’s jewelry while out at the bars or clubs is not generally a good idea. These kinds of things can be easily lost when out on the town. It is better to keep them somewhere safe or not bring them along at all.

Stick Together
If teenagers are traveling as a group and staying at a hotel, they should keep track of each other’s whereabouts. Doing a quick head-count at the beginning of each day is one way to be responsible. If someone turns out to be missing and the circumstances surrounding the disappearance are a bit suspicious, the local authorities should be contacted. The police and fire departments will likely be happy to assist when something goes wrong.Ultimately, for teens to stay safe when they are traveling by themselves, they should follow the tips mentioned above. If they use common sense and stick together when in places that they are not familiar with, they will likely have a safe and enjoyable time. They'll also come back with a lifetime of memories.

Another Untold Story of Butuan

Once upon a time before the Philippines was discovered by Ferdinand Magellan. A beautiful place where mountain hills, river, sea shores and water can be seen in that time. The seashore is at the foot of the mountain and hills.

The early civilization started life in upland and high level above the sea and along river banks. Time passed and due to erosion of the mountain, soils cover the seashores, the plain land grows bigger and wider. The seashores were now far from the mountains as it was used to be.

Agusan River (got its name from the word "AGUS" which means "flow of water") is one of the longest river in the Philippines during that time. The river gently flows in the foot of the mountains. People are using the river as their means of transport and communication. They uses the river for delivering and trade their crops to the mainland. Most people who travel along the river, they always pass a narrow part of the river which they find very difficult to navigate because of a big formation of rock that is blocking the river. Thus, this place was locally know as "PIT-OS" which means "Narrow or Difficult". "Pit-os was then called "Bit-Os".

The civilization in the main land was growing and the place was known to be the Trading Capital of Asia. Many merchants from China and other places brought their products for barter and trading with the natives which also trades goods like gold and their crops.

Sadly, Agusan River happened to be in a volcanic fault line. By the time there was a massive earthquake, the rock formation which was known as "Pit-Os" was shaked and fell down to the river and blocks the narrow creek which most people used as their passage to the main land. Due to the earthquake,  the Agusan River system was rerouted and the old narrow creek was gone. This happened when people heard a loud explosion due to the erosion of the rock formation along the narrow creek known as "Pit-Os".

Because of what happened to "Pit-Os", most of the traders were stranded and cannot find ways back to the sea. Thus, that loud explosion heard was the origin of which Butuan got its name.

During the early part of 1970, many artifacts were found from digged ancient boats at Libertad, the place were most of the traders were stranded during the time when the narrow creek called "Pit-Os" was block due to the explosion cause by a massive earthquake. These boats were called Balangay which happens to be a trademark for Butuan's rich culture and history.

* The rock formation that block the river during the earthquake was called Bit-Os Moon Rock, this name was given by the person who discovered it, Ramon P. Carampatana. Archaeologists said that the rock was 2 million years in existence.

A Place To Be - Bantayan Island

We are living in a country dominated or mostly populated by Roman Catholics. Because of it, we tend to celebrate holidays that would involve our religion’s practices. Example of which are town fiestas, the ever-infamous Sinulog Festival and other holidays or non-holidays that would involve a celebration or commemorate one’s religion. Holy week is something important to the Roman Catholics as a week for abstinence, fasting, reflection and prayers. Though it is not the same as our usual celebrations, but it is something we celebrate that won’t involve any parties or feasts.

Every Holy Week, most of us are planning to have a vacation or just want to unwind, because of the long week of holiday that we have. Others would plan on going to the beach or just anywhere outside our homes. Here in Cebu, it is a week that people would tend to plan in going to Bantayan Island. In that remote and peaceful island, every Holy Week is the time for the people their to have fun and party all night.

It is an island in the northern most part of Cebu and it is the last island in the north of Cebu. It would take you 4 – 5 hours of drive from Cebu city and you would also ride a barge from Daan Bantayan to reach the island of Bantayan. Every Holy Week is their celebration of their annual town fiesta. It is the only place that is approved by the Archdiocese of Cebu to be exempted from fasting and abstinence.

Crystal clear waters surround the island and the sands f the beach are very fine and white. It is the perfect getaway for those who want to celebrate their Holy Week with a blast. A lot of programs and parties will take place in their for at least 2 straight days. Most of the teenagers and those who are partygoers in the Cebu city would go there every year to celebrate and have fun. It is like a Sinulog Festival in an island version.

Though the place is quite far and not that easy to visit, but it is a place that makes all of your efforts worth it. The long hours of travel could probably drain us and make us tired, but if you’ll get there and see the place with your eyes. All of those negative energies in your body will be blown away and you will enjoy the smooth breeze and the tranquility of the island.

To those who wants to seek for adventure, you would probably try to go there and experience adventure where you never experienced before. Mostly beach resorts surround the island and they have also a cave for adventurer who wants to explore and have a great time. The resort there offers a lot of services and amenities that most of us would enjoy and gives us satisfaction more than we seek.

Have you gone to Siquijor Island or you are unfamiliar to this place? Each place either you know it or not has special or only one of its kind beauties. Every living creature was created by God, so all of them give the impression to be exceptional. Living creations by God like for example nature, makes our life totally complete because we can see the perfect beauty towards beautiful surroundings around us. Yes, positively GOD made them all—all living creatures that surrounds us.

Physically based, Siquijor Island is just a small dot in the map; while in the world map you can’t see it anymore. While you are travelling going to this island, you can actually say that this little island is just nothing to be fascinated. It is because it just a little island, no big buildings, a quiet place, not a crowded island, no plenty of buses or jeep. However, despite of those lacking; did you know that there are numerous beautiful spots that people who are living Siquijor Island are proud of? Let’s find out later.

Sorcerer is an individual who have magical powers from spirits who helped them or some sorcerer claims that they own power from God. Yes, there are some sorcerers who are present at Siquijor as what I have heard from hearsays but only few. Sorcerer will not destroy any people unless they have great sin. Most of them used their magical powers in positive way in which they can help people.

Agusanon Pride - Naliyagan Festival

The Festival

Naliyagan Festival is celebrated annually, highlighting the commemoration of the founding anniversary of Agusan del Sur every 17th of June. Also called the Bai Naliyagan, the week-long event showcases the culture and products of the province.

The event starts with a Manobo ritual where high priest of the Manobos called the baylan summons the spiritis of the forest, giving them a safe day in celebrating the occasion, same time driving away the evil spirits to avoid mishaps. A hog is butchered as its blood is offered by the priests, praying to appease the evil spirits in exchange of the safety of the people. Tobacco, eggs, fowls, gin, candles, fruits, and leaves chewed by natives, used as a concoction called mama, are also offered.

After the spiritual ceremonies, an event called the raising of the colors is held. Each barangay has their own flag raised at its designated flag pole in the Naliyagan Plaza. Soon, a giant balloon along with small balloons are released, representing dreams, hopes, and aspirations of the people of Agusan.

From day one to day six, an array of activities are prepared to be witnessed, especially by local and foreign tourists, who are drawn in every celebration, and keep on increasing year after year. One factor the Naliyagan appeals to the crowd is the holding of the Bai Naliyagan Beauty Pageant, participated by local beauties from 13 towns.

Activities in the festival are the Agri-industrial Fair, where indigenous cottage and agricultural products are displayed for sale, essay writing, cock derby, native games such as spear throwing, boat rowing, boxing, night concert on the culmination night, various sport competition, airsoft tournament, rappelling exhibition, which is participated by several teams all over Mindanao, the Naliyagan Agri-lympics featuring the biggest farm produce, fastest manual rice miller, mudfish relay, fastest fir maker contest, piglet catching, tribal street dancing competition that highlights the colorful ethnic display of the Manobo dance that has proven to be the top crowd drawer during the festivity.

All the natives of the river valley of Agusan del Sur come together, displaying their very own dances, songs, products of both agricultural and cottage industries, and handicrafts that pictures the lifestyle of the early natives.

Origin

Due to the continous support of the indigenous people of the Agusan, the Governor of the province came up with an opportunity to feature these indigenous people, showcasing their cultural heritage, products, artifacts, and their practices, in an event that fall the same day as the foundation anniversary of Agusan.
To have it addressed by a fitting name, the Governor sought the help of the Manobo elders, and chose naliyagan, meaning the chosen one and the most loved. Thus the Naliyagan Festival is born, being celebrated at the Naliyagan Plaza, same space where official celebration in the province and official programs are held.
